Our wonderful Maharishi Gandharva Veda musician Binay Krishna Baral, Artist in Residence at Maharishi University of Management for many years and devoted student of Maharishi Vedic Science, passed away in India on November 13. We will have a memorial service for him this Friday night, November 22, starting at 8:00 p.m. in Dalby Hall. Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate his life. The celebration will be rich with Maharishi Gandharva Veda music. Binay began his study of music under his uncle, and went on to study with two world-renowned masters of the Bansuri flute and exponents of the Indian classical tradition. Starting in 1988, Binay performed in concert for Maharishi Festivals of Music for World Peace in many different countries — England, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Holland, Russia, Israel, Scotland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden. In 1992 in Scotland, Binay performed at the Edinburgh International Festival, one of the worlds great arts celebrations, where he received outstanding reviews. He taught and conducted workshops for appreciative students in these countries and held many television and radio interviews. Binay was extensively educated. He was awarded an Indian government scholarship for advanced flute studies and went on to earn an MA in Instrumental Music from the Rabindra Bharatri University, Calcutta, in 1987. The next year he was awarded a Bachelors Degree in Teaching. He earned an MA in philosophy, and, while at Maharishi University of Management, an MA in Maharishi Vedic Science. He was hoping to return to the University to pursue a PhD in Maharishi Vedic Science. He performed his music regularly on All-India Radio (Calcutta) and made countless hours of audio recordings for the Maharishi Channel, which began broadcasting in 1998 from a global network of eight satellites that broadcast to every continent. In 2000 he gave a command performance during the coronation days of Maharaja Adhiraj Rajaraam, first ruler of the Global Country of World Peace. We were fortunate to have an artist of his caliber as Artist in Residence here at Maharishi University of Management. He taught courses in Maharishi Gandharva Veda music at the University and at Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment, and he gave private lessons to students of all ages. He also gave numerous public concerts, attended by many hundreds of people during the years he was here with us. Many Maharishi Gandharva Veda musicians have spent time on our campus over the years. Of all of them, Binay was most devoted to absorbing Maharishi Vedic Science and using this knowledge to illuminate his understanding and teaching of Maharishi Gandharva Veda music. Binay lived a very rich and fulfilled life, and he in turn touched and enriched the lives of countless people, here and all over the world.
