Over the last few weeks we have being completing an excavation at Chester Farm in the area of the old orchard. This was an extension of the excavation completed two years ago. We expected to find some further evidence of the suburban roman settlement with a few roman skeletons from backyard burials. When the top surface was cleared we began to realise there would be a lot more burials then we first estimated. Currently we estimate there are 25-30 in a small area. This is not a main burial ground but an area that may be related to a family group or a section of the community. The skeletons that have been cleared so far have been lifted and will be sent away for further investigation to determine gender and if any family links can be found through hereditary diseases etc. We will be doing a further excavation in this area as part of the Heritage Open day in September so please look out for more information. The excavation has been featured in the local media and we are pleased to have their continued support.
