PM ARREST DECISION B: Maivo Lafanama The National Court - TopicsExpress

PM ARREST DECISION B: Maivo Lafanama The National Court will hand down a decision next Tuesday whether to stay the warrant arrest obtained for Prime Minister Peter ONeill. A lengthy submission was presented by the police lawyer this afternoon. Mal Varitomos represented the police, and argued the jurisdiction of the court to issue a stay on the warrant. The hearing today once again attracted a packed court audience as police blocked of the roads leading into the court house. Movement of people within the vicinity of the court house was minimal. Mr Viritomos who took over on brief out, told the judge the court had jurisdiction to order a stay citing various cases. Among other arguments the lawyer also says Acting Police Commissioner Geoffery Vaki as duly appointed Commissioner had the right to issue instructions accordingly. Therefore the court should not hesitate to grant an interim stay. Lawyer Tiffany Twivey for the Prime Minister says there is division in the police force as clearly illustrated in the arrest of Mr Vaki and the change in lawyer. She therefore said the court has to intervene to prevent further tension that may lead to civil unrest.
