POLICE FAILS TO END LAPKA MENACE AT THE TAJ MAHAL Newspapers say the lapkas will be taught lessons in good manners...This afternoon while returning from Shilpgram towards the Taj I saw hordes of lapkas of all shapes and hues, pestering tourists, close to the taj khema, eastern gate and the western gate, all the way till the fort. District authorities, including the police, the CISF have miserably failed to end the Lapka menace (touts and dalals acting as guides and helpers) at the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Each time a foreign tourist visits the Taj, he is surrounded by Lapkas, socalled agents and canvassers for hotels, emporias and travel agencies. “It is such an ugly and disgusting sight. The harassment of tourists leaves a bad taste and very often tourists resolve never to return to the city,” says a senior guide. But it’s a huge racket with support from the police that sustains these unwanted and totally undesirable creatures called Lapkas who should be rounded up and put behind the bars forever.
