Palau’s Rock Islands The first day of the Global Reef Expedition’s mission to #Palau finds the Golden Shadow and her crew in the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon – a UNESCO World Heritage site. These small islands were formed from the skeletons of corals, spicules of soft corals, calcareous algae, mollusk and urchin shells, foraminiferans and other calcifying organisms. Many of these islands were former reef fronts that grew extensively while submerged and then were uplifted and sculpted by erosion over hundreds of thousands of years.
