Salty Thompson and Michael Engelbrecht were in Durban coaching the High School All-American rugby tour, and together with Robin Reid—Durban local, President and CEO of Aircraft Charter Solutions and a rugby-enthusiast—they decided to respond to the growing interest in rugby among young American athletes. Salty, Michael and Robin knew it was time to elevate the game of rugby in the United States—in both popularity and quality of play. With Reid’s financial investment and a blessing from Nigel Melville, President of USA Rugby, Salty and Michael left their jobs in education and information technology in order to fully invest themselves in scouting and training the best rugby athletes across the country, preparing them to play at the national level. Today, EIRA coaches travel from Southern California to Pennsylvania to Wales to New Zealand, bringing the best rugby instruction to rugby players of all levels. Born and raised in South Africa but residing in the USA since 1982 (Naturalized US Citizen 2012), Coach Engelbrecht possesses vast rugby experience in both the USA domestic game and the international game. Upon high school graduation in 1981 Coach Engelbrecht moved permanently to the USA and obtained a BBA degree from Abilene Christian University and a MBA degree from the University of Dallas focusing on information technology and management of the IT function. Coach Engelbrecht has over 25 years of experience in the IT industry as a technology professional with a strong background in design, development, implementation, and operational support of both application products and platform infrastructures. Coach Engelbrecht holds the USA Rugby Advanced Coaching Course (IRB Level III Equivalent) Coach Certification (Level 400), USA Rugby Coach Development Program coaching certifications, and was a certified USA Rugby Coach Development Program Course Leader. Coach Engelbrecht has a strong coaching resume and is actively involved in coaching at many levels. Coach Engelbrecht is currently a USA Rugby High School All American coach, the head coach of the Dallas Harlequins RFC recently fielding Rugby Super League, Division I, and Division II sides, and the rugby 7’s coach for the University of North Texas. Coach Engelbrecht has previously held coaching positions on the USA U19 National Team, USA U20 National Team, the Western Rugby Football Union National All Star Championship team, the Texas Rugby Union Collegiate Select side, and the Texas Rugby Union U19 Select Side. Coach Engelbrecht has been heavily engaged in carrying out five IRB Junior World Cup campaigns (in South Africa, Dubai, Northern Ireland, Wales, and Kenya) as well as a multitude of USA U19/U20 and High School All American tours (South Africa, England, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina). Coach Engelbrecht is married (28 years), has one son (most capped USA U19 player), and is actively engaged in his local church teaching teens, performing charity work, and participating on mission trips.
