Please Read This!!!!!! The privatization of the NOPD is in full progess. Besides a host of State statutes that would be violated, not to mention of the intended manner of vetting and screening of qualifed applicants, the absurdly deficient suggested training regimen, and the overall ramifications which will likely include increased insurance rates when unqualified accident investigators testfy in civil court, and too many other issues to mention here, everyone needs to ask this mayor a question. Not just PANO asking, but citizens, legislators, business leaders, EVERYONE…. WHAT IS THIS MAYORS GOAL FOR THE NOPD? Since taking office, he has: REFUSED to hire new recruits while droves of cops left. Over the last 4 years 500 cops are gone, with more leaving daily. IGNORED a survey done by PANO & Tulane University which demonstrated 80% of cops would leave if they could . And now they have. REPLACED experienced, tested, tenured, police managers and marginalized them with junior inexperienced untested commanders. OPPOSED a raise for NOPD. INVITED the DOJ to inflict a costly and unnecessary Consent Decree on the NOPD. DESTROYED the paid detail system which allows Events to take place safely , which in turn, drives the citys economy and supplements NOPDs deficient salaries. PROPOSED Civil Service changes to essentially place all hiring , firing, promotion, and pay in HIS sole authority. EXPLORED circumventing the Home Rule Charter to REPLACE NOPD WITH OPSO DEPUTIES REQUESTED PERMANENT assignment of State Police to REPLACE NOPD. PROPOSING REPLACEMENT of NOPD with unarmed, untrained, unqualified, illegal civilians. ALLOWED the last Superintendent to devise and implement a wide variety of failed and flawed strategies which put citizens at risk and drove off hundreds of cops. And now, taking advantage of a fear he helped create, he wants to fast-track this poorly thought out idea. The citizens of New Orleans need to know if they should contunue to live and work here. The members of the NOPD have, and continue to strive to keep the community safe while this mayor does everything he can to cripple the NOPD. And we do so, inspite of him, not because of him. Ive been accused of offering criticism but no solutions. We started the solution process with our professional survey to identify the problems and discuss solutions over 2 years ago. This mayor refused to address it. I work with highly tenured, experienced, educated and historically successful police managers, all perfectly willing to offer solutions. Instead, were illegally banished to a Katrina-era FEMA trailer in the middle of the stables, and prohibited from participating in departmental operations.
