Please be very careful and aware of your surroundings when working outside. Stephen M. Hutton was bitten by a copperhead snake on his left hand Wednesday morning. It was a young snake that released all its venom. We have learned that mature snakes give a warning strike first, but young snakes release it all. It was pretty serious...he received antivenom serum that cost $5 to $6 thousand a dose and spent over 24 hours in ICU. His entire left arm was swollen so much he could not touch his thumb to his index finger. On a scale of 1 to 10 his pain hit a 9.2. Fortunately, he received the antivenom serum in time that it appears there is no nerve damage. I happy to report that he is recoving nicely. The swelling will take at least a week to go down, but the pain can now be managed with Motrin. This has been a very scary ordeal! Just let his experience serve as a wakeup call to all of us who enjoy our gardening.
