Please o, small question, those insulting the dead man, are you happy he is dead simply because he was NDC or he has done you something? He was no Saint, heck there are no saints but he had a really really kind and warm human side. I know he had a passion for health issues in Ghana and was instrumental in the setting up of the Cardio center at Korlebu. Somewhere in 95/96, I do know that he played a role in sending 3 public servants to the UK for treatment. The Dr. Ann something something who got something into her head while treating a patient, a nurse ( I have forgotten what her condition was) and my step father a lecturer in biochemistry at legon who had been diagnosed with multiple myloma ( some kind of leukaemia) . In the case of my stepfather we were required to come up with 25% of the treatment cost at Cromwell hospital, the 25% saf we couldnt see top. One day my mum went to the Castle to see the then Chief of staff to see if we could get another hospital which will treat him for less. Among other things, the Chief of staff said to my mum your husband has cancer so what? Are these not the same lecturers who sit at Legon and criticise government? Lady get out of my office. Ironically, this same chief of staff died from cancer before my step dad oh, not knowing he get some wey e no know. Anyway, my mum left his office in tears only to meet PV on the castle corridors. He stopped and asked her what the matter was. He took her to his office listened and said, leave the documents with me. He spent personal time searching for hospitals in the UK we could afford and got back to us with Bartholomews. With that, my family could afford the 25% treatment cost. Government bore the 75% cost as well as accommodation and stipend to my parents during the treatment as well as airfare. In the case of the nurse, the government had to purchase 3 seats cos she couldnt sit and a fourth seat for her care giver -her biological sister. According to my mum, the nurses sister disappeared in UK as soon as the nurse was checked into hospital. The nurse did not survive treatment. The doctor Maryann( who remembers her name?) also died. My stepdad was the only one in that batch to come back alive even though he passed a year later. In 1999, I met PV at a fund raising for the Ghana heart foundation and I went up to him, introduced myself, reminded him of the assistance he gavemy family and said thank you. He told me then, that it cost the government so much to send public officials abroad not to mention the relatives who went with them and run away and so he believed that in supporting the establishment of specialist centers, more people could have greater access to specialist care at a cheaper cost. Of course he was a political animal, I dont dispute that but I salute him for his contribution and support to Dr. Frimpong Boateng in setting up the Cardio center. May he rest in peace.
