Police abuse of power, police militarization, and general lack of - TopicsExpress

Police abuse of power, police militarization, and general lack of accountability is a huge problem. It’s currently being degraded and undermined by those who try to frame it in terms of race. Cops consistently do really messed up things to people of ALL backgrounds, genders, ages, etc. I see tons of these stories all.the.time, the public doesn’t hear about them likely because they’re not exciting enough to be picked up by the media. The race card, on the other hand, has been played too many times - it has been maxed out. People rarely take accusations of racism seriously anymore thanks to the likes of Al Sharpton and Chris Matthews. At least, the presumption is very strong that the speaker is full of it because the accusation in most cases boils down to “I don’t have facts or logic on my side, but I will try to play on emotions to get my way.”Not only are these accusations offensive to victims of actual racism (which still exists), they divert attention from the problem on which we should be focusing. People should demand greater police accountability, people should fight for a shift of focus from enforcement of petty laws and going after victimless crimes to protection of individual rights. But I believe it’s a huge mistake to alienate those who are not yet aware of the problem and who could join the fight by making the movement look like a bunch of petty race-baiters desperately trying to get attention.
