Poor Chilli :( Apologies in advance for those of you who have just sat down for lunch and are faced with a picture of a saliva soaked chew but, i wanted to share with you the scare we had yesterday. I left the house at around 5.50pm to take my daughter to Brownies club. Before I went, I followed the usual routine of putting my 2 chihuahuas in one crate and Chilli in her crate along with her favourite squeaky toy, 2 kongs which were filled with her dinner, her water bowl and a chew that she had carried around for most of the day. When I returned to the house and pulled up outside, I could hear my 2 chihuahuas Tink & Nacho barking which is unusual and as I came in, I was alarmed by Chilli completely thrashing out in her crate, jumping up and down, bashing into the sides!. At a quick glance, I first thought she was having a funny 5 minutes but I called her name and as she stood still, she was heaving and pawing at her mouth. I immediately knew she was choking and flew into action. Whilst on auto-pilot, I took her out of the crate and checked her mouth for obstruction and there it was, the top (widest part of the chew in the pic) sticking up at the very back of her throat, I managed to retrieve it without causing any damage to Chillis throat. Despite this awful ordeal for my sweet Chilli and a very valuable lesson learnt for me, I am so grateful for 2 things. Firstly, that I was only 15mins out of the house or this couldve been so much worse and secondly and most importantly, that I took that canine first aid course back in June because if I hadnt, there is no doubt in my mind that I wouldve panicked and probably wouldve attempted a poor Heimlich manoeuvre. I can remember saying at the time, hopefully this is something ill never need but as a dog owner and qualified trainer, I felt it was useful to have just in case!. So glad i did and little did I know that just 3 months later, I would be using this first aid knowledge on my own 11 week old puppy. Chilli is back to my bouncy, happy girl and has been digging through the toy box looking for her chews today .
