Prevention Education Subcommittee Meeting Minutes June 4th, 2013 3:30-4:30pm Ellensburg High School, Room 156 (Sam Nelson’s room) Attendance: Crystal Church-KCCN&C (minutes), Sam Nelson-EHS, Dawn Bass-ADDS, Chelsea Silvestri-KCCN&C Intern, Dale Larson-WSU Extension Office Meeting Minutes 1. Welcome, introductions, sharing & updates: Sam: Voiced concern with Graduation and Parties. The social norm seems to be that it is acceptable to drink at these events. Dawn: Starting a ‘Youth Prevention Group’ this summer at ADDS on Wednesday’s at 4pm. This is a voluntary drop-in group. In Upper County, June 13th is the kick off to the Field trip program that is 11 years strong and going! July 1st budgets will dictate whether she can continue outreach at EHS via ADDS Dale: Accepting applications for the ‘Youth Advocates for Health’ program that KCYE is applying for. 2. Monthly Hot Topics: • This is a summer series designed to provide education to the Community on the current and local drug issues. June-Heroin • Town Hall Meeting: Heroin in Kittitas County June 18th, 6:30-8pm, City Hall Chambers (live on Channel 2) • The group brainstormed messaging ideas, panel questions, key people, title for event, and slide show content. July- • Ideas: Follow up on legal marijuana and the risks to youth Aug- • Ideas: Furnishing to Minors 3. Safe Homes Update Business recruiting-Chelsea • Businesses have been contacted to participate in program and be listed and promoted on Safe Homes website as well as educate employees on the program as well. kcsafehomes.org/ (see below) • Project will continue with next interns. Introduce Safe Homes Champion Card concept o Phase 2 of Safe Homes was introduced. o It will include a Champion card that allows people who have signed up to receive discounts at participating businesses Brainstorm businesses & discounts • Ellensburg Tire, Subway, Papa Murphy’s, Carl’s Jr., local school sporting events, bowling Alley, Theatre, Pool, Fair, Coffee Shops 4. Review PCN messaging Survey Monkey Results • Tabled until after school start to involve Youth in creation of posters 5. Confirm next meeting date • July 9th, 2013 • 8:30-9:30am • Dakota Café
