Protect Krabi from Coal Network Official Statement The Rockefeller Brothers Fund had stated on its official website on 22nd September 2014, a day prior to United Nations Climate Change Summit in New York, that it is committing to divest from investments in fossil fuels. Because the Rockefellers have long made their fortune from Standard Oil, this statement has proved that dirty means to produce electricity are stepping towards spiral of death. The fact that more than 150 coal power plants have been decommissioned in USA and many European countries, as well as in our neighbour country Myanmar, reflects that there can never be anymore constructions of coal power plant in their countries. The majority of countries in the world have the same tendency to stop the use of coal power plant and support renewable energy. The question has been raised on Thailand’s plan to construct many new coal power plants, despite being tropical country with all year sunlight and having many other resources for renewable energy. Does this act of rushing to build coal power plant carry a hidden agenda to serve the energy capitalist? One highly noticeable fact is that there is an energy capital group that had already possessed coal concession in Indonesia and Australia. We, the people, are enslaved in energy monopoly and would be unavoidably affected by incurable impacts. The plan to construct coal power plant in Krabi has made people a victim of energy capitalism. Thus, we cannot be silent about what may destroy people’s lives and environment. Nature is the most precious thing we can pass on to the next generation. What happened along the EIA process is merely an act to legitimise energy capitalism; we cannot accept such process because our strategy clearly states that we do not want coal power plant. There is no need for us to further acknowledge the process which aims to put coal power plant in Krabi. The 3rd public hearing and review today is set for the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand and it does not comply with Krabi development strategy that needs clean energy. Although this public review may pass, we firmly insist on Krabi people’s will to stand against the construction of coal power plant in the province. We believe that the power of people intention is greater than the unlawful act that is being carried at the moment. Krabi people insist that we will help to protect this province from coal power plant for as long and as much as we have to. Protect Krabi from Coal Network 12 October 2014
