Public Service Announcement: Toxic Flowering Plants to your Pets With the oncoming of spring, I know many people will be sprucing up gardens and bringing fresh plants into your home. Many very aesthetically pleasing plants can be very toxic to your pets if they are eaten, especially the bulbs or stamens and berries. Signs of toxicity can involve gastrointestinal distress (i.e. hypersalivation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), central nervous system depression (i.e. stupor, incoordination, drowiness, dizziness), kidney and liver damage, and cardiac depression. Below is a list of a few common troublesome plants, but if you see your furry kids eating any plant and are concerned that it may make them ill, the ASPCA has a great website full of resource information to help you determine if they are harmful. When in doubt, check it out: Common Toxic Plants (2014) All of the Lily family, especially Peace Lilies and Stargazer Lillies Marijuana Sago Palm Tulip and Narcissus Bulbs Azalea Rhodendendron Oleander Castor Bean Kalanchoe Yew Amarylis Autumn Crocus Chyrsanthemum English Ivy Pothos Schefflera In general, keeping flower bulbs away from where your pet can readily access them will help keep them from endangering themselves.
