RULE OF LAW - The Series & TELLURIDE FILM FESTIVAL Since the Telluride Film Festival happens this weekend, here is the cover to RULE OF LAW - Episode Nine - Hollywood Down. This occurs during the Telluride Film Festival, but in an alternate universe. Episode Nine – Hollywood Down Storyline – The Telluride Film Festival is one of the industry’s premier platforms for introducing many of Hollywood’s upcoming blockbusters. This event occurs every Labor Day Weekend, attracting many of the industry’s top actors, producers, writers, and directors. Fans and critics of film are always hot on the trail, in pursuit of a chance meeting with some of their big screen heroes. Like the thousands of other, random tourists to the Colorado High Country, some of these industry attendees come unprepared for or unaware of life in the mountains. If you are not careful, it is so easy to run into a wayward elk on the highway. Truth be told, live or die, the elk always wins. But, I digress. If it isn’t a critter on the highway, travelers certainly get into trouble overestimating the capabilities of their vehicles, often getting stuck on high alpine mountain passes or difficult forest service roads. And the list of possibilities goes on – river rafting accidents, lost or trapped hikers in the back country, falling off your horse or mountain bike. Johnny Carrington, hot off his recent Oscar win for best actor in a supporting role, rides into town to check out the scene and to advance his brand. Unfortunately, Johnny comes unprepared, not only for the setting, but for its local inhabitants. A chance encounter ends this star’s career, and the curtain falls on his charmed life. When Johnny fails to check in at his five star hotel, his manager panics and calls Monty. Monty and Rhett trace Johnny’s path of travel from the airport in Montrose. Did he pack his own trouble with his luggage or did somebody, or something “discover” him on his voyage over the mountain pass. By the numbers and by the accolades, Johnny Carrington is one of Hollywood’s hottest commodities. Yes, he is a commodity, just like pork, cattle, oil, and grain. He is sold to the highest bidder and generates revenue, in return, for everyone involved. Johnny is currently riding the crest of the wave of fame and fortune, having just won an Oscar for best actor in a supporting role. He is good-looking, rich, popular, and successful, no doubt. But, just like any Hollywood prop or cartoon cutout character standing in the lobby of a theater, he is shallow. This town, Hollywood, has fed his ego for years. He has overdosed on unreturned compliments, looks in the mirror, and royalty payments. Along the way, he has developed some pretty bad habits and learned some deplorable behavior. Twice divorced, and a well-known philanderer, Johnny has broken up marriages, including his own, and has more female conquests than Wilt Chamberlain. He is vain, narcissistic, and self-absorbed, learned behaviors in an industry that values appearances and charm. Unfortunately, Oscar’s golden boy is not beyond reproach, from someone’s bitter ex-husband or boyfriend, another actor whose role was taken, a jilted agent, or a crossed pharmaceutical supplier. But, the list goes on. He probably has more enemies than he has friends. And, among his friends, they stick around because he serves a purpose. They tolerate him so long as they extract something of value in return. There’s an electrical storm on the horizon, Johnny boy. Not a good time to be swinging the clubs or cursing the heavens. Lest you change your ways, your fortunes are about to change. Have a great time in Telluride, promoting your brand, collecting stares and compliments. But be warned, you are now out of your element. And, the mountains can be unforgiving. Music: SCENE FOUR - Kool & the Gang, Hollywood Swinging. youtube/watch?v=rD-VvbGa8H4
