‘Rallies only at designated places’ Police to monitor election campaigns SRINAGAR: As Assembly elections are coming nearer, the clamour among the political parties for holding election rallies is on the rise but only at the designated places.In backdrop of the devastating floods, the political parties were reluctant to hold rallies and ran door to door campaign instead. However, as elections are coming closer, the political parties are now seeking votes and holding rallies at the designated places.Sources said the security agencies have asked contesting candidates to follow newly formulated security guidelines for the Assembly elections. All the mainstream political parties have geared up for the forthcoming Assembly polls, starting from November 25.“The candidates have been advised to inform the local police before holding any election rally in their respective areas,” a senior police official said. He said the election rally will only be allowed at secured places.“We have to make adequate security arrangement before any election rally is held. The security forces are fully prepared to maintain law and order and hol disruption free polls,” he said. Police sources said 50,000 personnel of central paramilitary will assist the J&K police in ensuing free and fair polling during the upcoming elections.The political parties were reluctant to hold the election rallies after the devastating floods that left around 300 people dead and rendered thousands of people homeless. The floods hit the election preparedness of political parties. According to the details compiled by the state’s Home Department, over 7,500 political rallies were held during the past four years till Parliamentary elections. Details reveal that 1,591 rallies were held in 2010, 1646 and 1810 political rallies were recorded in 2011 and 2012 respectively. While as in the year 2013, sources said over 2,500 rallies were held across the state. In 2014, record numbers of election rallies are predicted to be held in 2014.
