Read the inspiring story of how free lighting has been brought to some of the poorest communities in the world without any the need for any electricity or specialist equipment. All that is necessary for this remarkable innovation is a 1.5 liter plastic bottle filled with water and a little bleach. The bottle is installed on the roof of the building where during daylight hours it acts as a prism for sunlight. It is so effective at refracting the light that it can provide as much light as a 55 watt light bulb. It uses readily available materials, is easy and inexpensive to install and best of all can provide a home with free light for up to five years! The MyShelter Foundation has used this idea to transform poor neighbourhoods in the Philippines where many cannot afford the electricity to run lighting for their homes. Since then it has grown into a global movement, with over 200,000 Solar Bottle Bulbs installed worldwide. Read more about the Liter of Light initiative which aims to bring light to a million homes by 2015.
