Really amazing convo with my 9 yo this evening... Mads: Mom, what is exile? (Totally reasonable question, goes to Catholic school) Me: Its like a form of banishment. When you have to leave all your friends and family and go away from what you are used to. Mads: Why? Me: Well, technically, because someone did something really bad, they get sent into exile...but...when you look at it historically, it usually happens to people who are telling the truth about what is happening right now at the moment. People who have the courage to speak up and speak out against people in power, they usually get exiled. It often boils down to who has more power, not necessarily who is right. Mads: Is that what happened to Dr. Andy? Me: (shocked) Sorta. Professionally, yes. And, yes, he lost his country. Thats all true. But, the people who understand science and integrity, they always stood by him. His family and the people who matter, they always stood by him. So, the goal the people in power had in mind, was indeed exile...so, you are right about the concept. But, it didnt manifest as they would have liked. Everyone who knows him, knows what he stands for. And they stand by him. And lots and lots more people are realizing everyday he was right. And they are standing by him now too. Mads: (tearing up) But, why did that have to happen to him? He is a good man. Noah is getting better because of him! Me: Oh Madagascar, why did Ian get sick? Why did Noah get sick? Why are so many more kids getting sick everyday? We dont know why it happened to our families. But we know how it happened, how to stop it, and how to help the kids who do get sick. And that is what is important. We can do something about it. We can stand up. We can change it. Mads: Well, I am going to raise at LEAST 50.00 for that Canary Kids movie. This has got to stop! Really amazed that I was gifted with such amazing teachers in my life. My kids are so much smarter than me.
