Reminder: Our free astronomy lecture is coming this Saturday, September 21 at 7:00 pm in Health & Science Center room 1234; see below for details. I hope you can join us! Joe DalSanto Hello everyone! In addition to our growing credit astronomy classes, I am pleased to announce the upcoming Continuing Education (non-credit) astronomy events and classes at College of DuPage for the Fall 2013 term. We had a tremendous turnout for the spring and summer programs and I look forward to seeing you all again. Feel free to share this information with anyone interested in attending. The schedule for Fall 2013 is as follows: 1. Free lecture: Exploring Saturn, Saturday, September 21, 7:00 pm, HSC 1234 Astronomers have studied Saturn and its spectacular rings for several centuries from Earth – but only in the last few decades have we been able to study it up close using space probes. What have these probes found out about the planet, its rings and it’s intriguing moons? What discoveries have surprised scientists? And what mysteries remain to be unlocked? Join us as we explore Saturn thru the eyes of NASA’s Voyager and Cassini missions. 2. Continuing Education course: Our Solar System - Fridays: Oct 4, 11, 25, Nov 1 - 7:00 pm, SRC 1118 Classes: The Terrestrial Planets – Four small, rocky worlds – Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars - orbit near the Sun. What processes have determined their internal structures and surface features? How are they similar – but why are they so different? This class will explore the craters of Mercury, the crushing inferno of Venus, our magnificent Earth, and the canyons and volcanoes of Mars. The Gas Giants – Four large, gaseous worlds – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune – orbit far from the Sun. How did these giants get so large? What are their atmospheres and interiors like? Why do they have very different ring systems? Join us as we explore these fascinating worlds thru the eyes of robotic spacecraft. Moons of the Solar System – The moons of the outer solar system are a diverse and fascinating group with unique stories all their own to tell. This class examines the icy moons of the gas giant planets and their surprising features – including subsurface oceans and even active volcanoes! Minor Planets & Comets – Why does our solar system include the small, rocky asteroids and icy comets? What are the recently discovered dwarf planets? And why is Pluto no longer a planet? Come explore these little-know worlds that hold clues to the nature and origin of our solar system. Registration is easiest by calling (630) 942 2208 or on the Continuing Education website (cod.edu/academics/conted/index.aspxn). You are also welcome to contact me by replying to this message. I look forward to seeing you for an exciting fall schedule! Best regards, Joe DalSanto Instructor of Astronomy College of DuPage 425 Fawell Ave Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 cod.edu/programs/earth_science/
