Retailers, take note. The following is a story about perfect Customers. There’s a tale from many, many years ago, about a new, young salesman in the rug department at Harrods. The story goes that while his boss was out for the morning, a lady with immense style, confidence, poise and, above all, fur came in to procure the finest, silkiest rugs. She was clearly a regular customer and she swept through the department with great purpose, indicating the pieces she desired with a hand so decorated that it could have solely stocked the jewellery department. The order was immense. The total sum was so colossal that the young salesman, whose voice had now risen several octaves, wanted to leap with joy, but he impressively kept his composure and delivered the precious bundle to the waiting car, which had a boot so enormous he would have happily made it his home. With a parting “Send me the bill”, the car glided away, leaving a lingering exotic scent that lifted the young man to a new, giddier height of euphoria. By the time he had returned to the rug department his wily boss had also returned, and it was with great excitement that he explained how he had orchestrated the sale of the millennium. After the young chap had been suitably commended, the boss wanted to get down to business. “I’ll prepare the bill. What was the lady’s name?” Like an icy north Atlantic wave was sweeping over him, the young salesman realised that he had completely forgotten to discover this, the most important of details. The colour drained from his lips, his chest caved and his shoulders slumped. The peacock went through a startling metamorphosis into a clucking hen. Surprisingly, his cunning boss was unconcerned. “This lady would have been one of eight regular customers who perfectly fit her description. We’ll send them all the invoice and the actual purchaser will pay.” He then set about typing up eight invoices. The true identity of this particular customer was never discovered. All eight invoices were promptly settled.
