He was a shoe shine boy and would hop aboard trains when they stopped at the station in Biloxi and shine passengers shoes (R. L. would be ever alert to the departing train whistle so that he could hop off the train before it started again). R. L. would also buy seafood early each morning off of seafood boats and go door to door and sell his wares. R. L. was quite smart and very industrious. Before R. L. entered the Navy he worked on seafood boats and was a Barq’s Rootbeer route driver (he delivered the beverage to various businesses around Biloxi). Yes, he did build those small businesses.
