Rush Hour - I love me a good buddy cop action film! From Lethal Weapon to The Other Guys and even Tango and Cash, there seems to be something gratifying about seeing a couple of polar opposite law enforcers kick a bunch of ass together and exposit banter between one another. Strangely, I grew up hearing about this movie from friends and NEVER watched it until now. When I finally did, I was entertained and couldnt stop laughing! Chinese police officer Lee is flown into California to rescue the daughter of a Chinese diplomat who hes friends with. When the FBI dont want his assistance, he is paired up with Detective Carter of the LAPD who the Bureau poses as one of theirs. After initially not being most enjoying of each others company and being led on several rabbit trails, they slowly unravel bigger conspiracies and must race to save the girl. I like how they weave multiple nations into the standard action plot for this film. Some of the scenes that take place in China do good to set-up the plot that later transitions well into the Los Angeles setting. There are three important things that are expected from a buddy cop film to be awesome. One is the performances of the main duo. Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker of course knock it out of the park with them uttering some very hilarious one-liners and showing off their appropriate fighting skills. Tucker is competent in the fist fights and gun battles while Chan makes any martial arts scene look like he can do in his sleep. The second factor is the action and... I just said it was cool. The gun battles, fist fights, car chases, its all there and very cool looking! The third and last factor is the pacing. Rush Hour moves at a solid pace with great comedic moments placed in between the action and holds your attention throughout. Outside of Tucker, Chan, the action and comedy, the rest of the movie is very good. The other actors are great, the stunts are exceptional, the editing and scripting of the fight scenes are well done, its got all the greats of a entertaining action comedy movie. I still am surprised I didnt watch this movie sooner. These movies were still relevant when I was young and they wouldve been great for multiple watches to where I could quote many of the famous lines and scenes. Rush Hour is definitely in the league of Lethal Weapon and is probably one of the funniest buddy cop films ever. Chan and Tucker make a good pairing and the action will satisfy people wanting to see millions of somersaults and machine gun rounds blasted across the room.
