SATTRIYA: Classical Dance of Assam interspersed with the screening of excerpts of the dances by monks of monasteries. The South India Heritage Lecture Series Presented by Bangalore International Centre (A TERI Initiative) In association with Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) By Dr. Sunil Kothari Renowned dance historian, scholar, author and critic Chair and Moderator Dr. Maya Rao, Internationally reputed Dancer, Choreographer, Teacher, Writer, Academician & Dance Curator About the Talk Sattriya dance of Assam received recognition as the 8th classical dance form by Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) in the year 2000.Though performed since 600 years in the monasteries of Assam they were presented in historic All India Dance seminar in April 1958 convened by SNA in New Delhi and were brought to the notice of the world at large. Performed by the celibate monks in the Sattras, it has all the elements of a classical dance form. Its propagator Sankaradeva, a great Vaishnava saint, poet and scholar established the dance-drama form to bring harmony and peace 600 years ago in strife ridden Assam. He and his principle disciple Madhavadeva established the institution of Sattra, where instead of idol worship Sankaradeva placed a manuscript of Srimad Bhagavata on a throne and established Neo-vaishnavism. Today from monasteries Sattriya dance has moved to metropolitan proscenium stages and is performed by both male and female exponents. About Dr. Sunil Kothari An internationally renowned dance historian, scholar, author and critic, Dr. Sunil Kothari, has to his credit more than 16 definitive books on classical dance forms of India. Most of them are published by the Marg Foundation under the editorship of Dr Mulk Raj Anand, including Bharatanatyam, Chhau Dances of India, Odissi, New Directions in Indian Dance, Sattriya: Classical Dance of Assam. The other works include Kuchipudi, Photo biographies of Uday Shankar and Rukmini Devi, Damaru, Rasa Volume I, Dance Sculptures of Medieval temples of North Gujarat with reference to Sangitopanisatsaroddhara. He was Professor and Head, Dept of Dance, Ravindra Bharati University, Kolkata and also Dean and Professor, School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. As a Fulbright Professor he has taught at New York University, Georgia, UCLA and Evergreen College in USA. Dr. Kothari has curated for IGNCA, New Delhi an exhibition on the legendary dancer Uday Shankar for the centenary year in 2000-2001. For his outstanding contribution to Indian dance the President of India has honoured him with the civil honour of Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi award. Dr Kothari was a dance critic of The Times of India group of publications for 40 years. Based in New Delhi he contributes regularly to Sruti monthly, Nartanam quarterly and e-portal Narthaki, besides writing for The Hindu and Deccan Herald. Very few know that Dr. Kothari is a full -fledged Chartered Accountant. About Dr. Maya Rao Internationally reputed Dancer, Choreographer, teacher, writer, academician & dance curator, Dr Maya Rao is synonymous with dance. She is the recipient of several awards including the National Award (President of India Award) for Choreography from the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the Karnataka State Award, the prestigious Shantala Award for the Govt. of Karnataka, the Emeritus Fellowship from the H.R.D. Govt. of India and an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University. Maya Rao has led cultural delegations to over 30 countries, creating awareness and sharing the rich dance heritage of India worldwide. Padmasri Shri. Shambu Maharaj of the Lucknow Gharana and Shri Sunderprasad of the Jaipur Gharana were her Kathak Gurus. Her solo recitals and dance dramas imbibed both styles winning much acclaim in India and Overseas. She runs Indias only degree college of choreography- The Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography. Maya Rao was Chairperson of the Karnataka State Sangeet Nritya Academy (1987 – 1990.) during which period she initiated National Performing Arts Festivals at Heritage Monuments – Somanathapura (1988), Pattadakkal (1989) and Halebid (1990). Maya didi, as she is fondly called, has trained over 3000 students in a lifetime offered to her passion and mission- Dance. About IGNCA: The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) was established in 1987 as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, as a nodal centre for research, academic pursuit and dissemination in the field of the arts. ‘The Arts’ encompass a wide range of subjects - from archaeology and anthropology to the visual and performing arts, enveloping them in a complementary, integrative and non-demarcated vision. Through workshops, seminars and conferences, concerts and performances and exhibitions, these cultural artifacts are disseminated to the public at large. The Southern Regional Centre (SRC) of IGNCA is headquartered in Bangalore. Spread over ten acres outside the precincts of the Bangalore University campus, its establishment in 2001 was aimed at intensifying the Centre’s studies on the southern region’s art and cultural heritage.
