SCANDALOUS: disgracefully bad, typically as a result of someones negligence or irresponsibility. AN OPEN LETTER TO CANDACE HAIRSTON: Hub Director at Jessup W. Scott High School, recent recipient of the 20 under 40 Award for leadership. It is not in my character to call out/challenge a young sister but sometimes it is necessary to do just that when the Life Dreams of a child are at stake. Today I was scolded by you, a community leader in a meeting in front of men and women who are trying to make this community a better place for children, elders and young people like yourself. I am an elder, at least 35 years your senior. Your tongue lashing would have been better received if you had given it in private, if you were truthful and if you werent so driven by misplaced power. Your attempt to censure me and what I post on FaceBook was outside the bounds of good moral judgment and good behavior. Let me make THIS perfectly clear, FACEBOOK is the medium that I chose to voice my opinion, and there is NOTHING you can say to make me go away....Well maybe there is, I will speak more about that. No one has to read my page, look at my pictures or watch my videos. As a matter of fact I warn people in advance---maybe you may want to steer clear......I am an advocate for children, a 44 year member of this community, a parent of a Scott graduate (the only one of my beautiful/intelligent children to end up in prison), a grandparent of children living in the Scott District (grandchildren who would rather go to a high school out of the state rather than go to a school within walking distance of their home) missing out on opportunities to grow with their neighborhood peers, unable to say, Once a BULLDOG, always a BULLDOG! *Woof Woof! Your tongue lashing included so many inaccuracies that espoused a hidden agenda and just what that agenda is and whoever proposed that you ignite a conversation in this manner was beyond my imagination. Your statement that I somehow damaged Scott students with my postings is your attempt to politicize the students. The only statements I have made against Scott High School were spoken with experience, validity and knowledge. Know your history, if it werent for a handful of us, Mr. Ben Williams, Minister Charles Muhammad, Mr. Warren Woodberry, Darlene Fisher, Steve Flagg and Mr. Tyrone Sturdivant, there wouldnt even be a Scott and you would not even have a job at Scott because the plan was to rear it down, just like they did Libbey. Look it up! You and your minion are a rash on the educational opportunities of every student who attends Scott and the ones who are bused out of the neighborhood, city and state, because you are the ones standing at the door keeping it close to so many opportunities for this community and its children. We spent time, money and effort to keep Scott High school standing (otherwise it would be a pile of rubble)and you turn around and try to quiet a community advocate? We attended board meetings, committee meetings in the middle of the day, wrote letters, wrote complaints to anybody who would listen. We were excoriated by certain segments of the community. None of us had anything to gain financially, just wanted to do right by this communitys children. Finally someone listened. This district is one of the few districts in the nation, that is being investigated by the Department of Justice. Maybe, just maybe Justice will prevail and Scott Students will have the same opportunities that Bowsher and Start do. Just maybe. Oh and what you can do is to join hands with me and embrace my dream for my communitys children....other than that, keep it moving....... A POSTSCRIP TO THE STUDENTS AT SCOTT HIGH SCHOOL: Keep climbing until you get to your Dream. Even under adversity, discrimination, lack of educational opportunities, systemic failures that you are paying for, substandard equipment and being in the midst of Dream Snatchers, keep going up until you reach the top.
