SOME FACTS ABOUT THE ASHTABULA CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT. In the past decade, the Ashtabula City Police Department has seen a seen a huge decrease in personnel, as our numbers were once at around 42 sworn officers, 4 dispatchers and several correction officers. Our staffing levels are now at 26 sworn officers, 2 dispatchers and no correction officers. Due to this shortage, we are commonly serving a community of approximately 19,500 people with only three 3 officers (6,500 citizens per officer) on the road and on occasion 4. Annually we handle 15,000 to 24,000 calls and complete written reports on 25% or more of those calls. Currently one of these officers works district 2, which is everything south of RT20. This officer also handles all calls that come to the station and jail duties. Jail duties include, hourly jail checks, feeding inmates, jail laundry, jail cleanliness, inmate care and taking inmates to court appearances. The jail officer also must accompany inmates for medical treatment, like when the go to the ER or a doctor visit. These duties remove this officer from the streets, sometimes up to several hours.
