SOOOOOOOOO, true. I was in Escondido when cable first came to that town. I remember all of the discussion about which company would be the carrier for Escondido. My questions at the time were: why only one company, & isnt this a monopoly? The answer was that this was the way the the system was set up. Not really an answer. In reflection, lobbyists working in Congress and with the FCC won the day for single-sourcing geographic areas at the outset, over the objections of groups of individuals who pointed out that this would cost the subscribers big $$$$$$$$s because of lack of competition. Phooey, said the cable companies, Besides, companies can only afford to wire a limited # of areas, so we have to single source or it will take forever to wire the country. A BS answer if ever there was one. SOOOOOOOOO, this system still exists in some areas. In other areas, multiple sources are available, but AMAZINGLY, their prices, regardless of what their ads tout, are virtually the same. Until someone with deep pockets sues all of the way to the SCOTUS, nothing will change because, de facto, the ENTIRE INDUSTRY is, ta dahhhhhhh, a MONOPOLY ( which is blatantly illegal, but, wtf, thats life in the silver-lined pockets everywhere).
