STORY FOR MY NURSE FRIENDS ABOUT MY FLIGHT HOME FROM ALASKA. GOT TO READ THIS NURSES ....Let me tell you A CRAZY STORY. We flew out of Anchorage at Midnight and 3 hours into the flight they announce they are in need of Dr or a Nurse. Guess what,.... out of a full flight of about 300 I am the only nurse aboard besides my daughter Ashley who is pregnant and had been sleeping. I come forward and said I am a RN. The stewardess then ask for my nursing credientials. Its 3 am goodness. Sure let me pull them out of my pajama pocket. My wallet is in my checked bag. I took only neccessary things out of it and placed it in my checked bag who would ever think to travel with it. I told her where I worked and that I was a practicing RN if they do indeed need help. A man came forward too and said he was a EMT. Well so here we go. Stewardess said here is what we have. A gentleman cant breath. On going to see the man I quickly see the elderly man in first class section was in respiratory distress. They only equipment i have is small mask with a bag on the end. Looks like a nonrebreather but is not. The bag will not inflate either. He needed a non-rebreather no doubt, They have o2 tanks that only flow 4 liters from what I coud tell. I could barely read the tanks. There oxygen tanks are nothing like what we work with they are for high altitudes. No HF canulas. The stethescpoe was like the one in contact room. Could not hear nothing with it from the screaming engine sounds. Forget hearing lung sounds well either. had no o2 saturation machine. So really I had to use all visuals. We are hitting turbulance and I have flight anxiety so that was insane. The pilot wanted to know my nursing opinion about his condition and I said he needs help asap. Hes shaking, pale, pulse near 100 and RR high 30s. The issue was we could not land because we were over Cananda airspace. There is some rule about that not sure what it is. The pilots would not let me in the cockpit to speak with the MD he had on the phone due to safety rules. They were relaying messages between the MD to the Pilot to the Stewardess then to me. The gentleman did have a rescue inhaler which I used on him several times. I thought that we were going to be doing cpr soon. Poor man and his wife. Felt so helpless. Felt of helpless because I had nothing to work with. That puts things in a whole new light for you. Very sad. Finally we got priority permission to land but not in canada. He was much more stable at that time but still needing help quickly. I am taking God I was there and could help. Thanking God to be able to pray for him. Just grateful to do what I do because you never know what you may find yourself in. Thanking God for always giving me a time and place to show his Glory.Wishe I traveled wtih some equipment...lol Like a nursing bag. Hey you never know when you need it. The plane gave a standing ovation which was totally embarassing. So so so embarrassing. This is my job. We do save lives and we do much more behind the scenes that God provides that most people never see. Thanks to God today for his love and safety.GLAD TO BE HOME THOUGH>>>> WHAT A FLIGHT. There is more to this story that is so halrious though and I can share it in person...lol. Please read my next post about what happen on the way home from the airport
