SUPERNATURAL ENABLEMENT – 3. LIVING YOUR EXPECTATIONS. “Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armour on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. I cannot go in these, he said to Saul, because I am not used to them. So he took them off.” 1 Samuel 17:38-39(NIV). Our stage opened today with David on set, a shepherd boy who found himself in a tight corner in trying to profer a solution for his nation’s awkward situation. David learnt the most vital lesson of his life at this moment of his life, when he was about to confront and kill Goliath and thus save the insults of his king. The grandeur of the scene, and the accompanying expectations of the establishment got the better of David, a simple, poor teenager, who stumbled on the scene, but actually turned out to be the right person for the job of killing the giant that was threatening the whole nation with slavery. In the context of the fierce battle for supremacy that was ongoing between Israel and their Philistine enemies, God’s blessing on David gave him a unique perspective from everyone else on that battlefield. He was the only person who actually believed that Goliath was doomed and was willing to stake his life to justify that expectation. He managed to obtain King Saul’s permission to fight Goliath. However, that permission also came with a heavy burden of unwelcome expectation David must kill that giant Saul’s way, he has to be decked in the paraphernalia of conventional warfare. This looked good on the surface, but soon proved potentially lethal to David’s aspiration, he just could not move in Saul’s rather heavy and oversize armour. He wasn’t used to them. Why did David consent to wear Saul’s armour in the first place? Well, he did not want to offend his king. He wanted to fit it in and he ended up nearly drowning in the slime of the wrong expectation that was placed on him. David realised that he had to make a decision; he had to discard this yoke of wrong expectation and free himself to be himself and do things his own way – the way God had trained him. His ultimate reaction proves that you can’t consistently act in a way that is inconsistent with your core beliefs. So, once he had cast off the burden of wrong expectations, David was ready to confront and kill Goliath. The moment David stopped deceiving himself by trying to please others or fulfil their expectation, he became free to pursue God’s plan and purpose for him. If you are unwilling to take the same drastic step, you will be paralysed by the shackle of trying to satisfy people’s wrong expectation of you. Rather than living to fulfil God’s purpose for your life, you will waste precious time pursuing plans that are doomed to failure. God’s promise provides us grounds for solid expectations and is crucially never meant for fulfilling spurious wrong expectation people have of us. So, whose expectation are you living to fulfil; parents, family, spouse, society, boss, pastor or leader? Well, until you totally reject and jettison every wrong expectation, the fulfilment of God’s promise for your life might well have to wait. Pray for yourself this prayer; Lord, I realise that I can only master my destiny by refusing enslavement to people’s wrong expectations of me. Grant me the courage to remain true to God and to myself and help me to fulfil destiny. OUR SLOGAN.... I WILL GO FORWARD, I WILL GO HIGHER, I WILL INCREASE, I WILL WAX GREAT.... UNTIL MY BLESSINGS OVERFLOWS AND I BECOME A BLESSING UNTO OTHERS. Do enjoy this music — “I WILL EXALT YOU” - HILLSONG. youtu.be/kigbo_Z10Hg Shalom.
