Sappho was one of the nine great lyric poets of Ancient Greece, and she lived on the island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea, as did Alcaeus, another of the nine. The word lesbian is derived from Lesbos, because Sapphos poetry alluded to love of women. She was revered throughout ancient times and taught in the academies, but unfortunately we now only have fragments of her work.
