Saturday, November 9th Association of Native Alumni – Meet and Greet with Natives at Penn Time: 4 PM – 6 PM Location: Houston Hall, Bishop White Room 3417 Spruce Street Join ANA for a “meet and greet” with alumni and students. Come hear Natives at Penn Co-Chairs Sean Massa and Caroline Kee present the agenda for November’s Native Heritage Month, and discuss the upcoming year long Native Lecture Series, featuring Native faculty, seniors, and Ph.D. candidates. We will also celebrate with ANA Chair Ann Dapice, who is being honored this Homecoming with an alumni award from the Graduate School of Education! Lastly, we will discuss the age long hot topic regarding American Indian mascots in American sports today. We will take a critical look at the long-running practice of “honoring” Native Americans by using them as mascots and nicknames in sport. We will discuss the current developments and how we can become a part of the change! Our discussion will include excerpts from “In Whose Honor?” a documentary on this topic, a related webinar entitled Racist Stereotypes and Cultural appropriation in American Sport hosted by National Museum of the American Indian and other published articles on this topic.
