Sea Oat’s Release: a wonderful way to mark the end of another successful season of EE at Jekyll 4-H! This morning on the beach in front of the Jekyll Island 4-H Center, students from Program Challenge and Stephens County Middle School had the chance to take part in saying goodbye and good luck to the Tidelands Nature Center 4-H sea turtle ambassador, Sea Oat! Sea Oat, a loggerhead sea turtle, hatched August 14, 2009 from a nest on Sea Island. Sea Oat was a straggler hatchling and was found in the sand dunes after being attacked by a ghost crab and fire ants. Luckily, Sea Oat was discovered by Ashley Raybould with the GA DNR and was taken to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center where he/she spent five months healing from his/her injuries. Sea Oat has spent the last four years educating tens of thousands of students and members of the public about sea turtles both at Jekyll 4-H and Tidelands. We were very excited that Ashley Raybould was on hand to celebrate the occasion! Thank you to Rick Bauer with the GSTC/Applied Wildlife Conservation Lab for his help during the release. Good luck Sea Oat and remember what Dori always says, “Just keep swimming”!!!
