Senior Director, Development Strategies CORPORATE AREA: Development Services STATUS: Full time/Regular/Exempt JOB OBJECTIVE: The Senior Director, Development Strategies is key to the implementation of comprehensive development services for local stations with the goal of optimizing local individual fundraising initiatives critical to the financial sustainability of local stations. S/he oversees the work of PBS Development Services staff that support stations’ individual giving, including membership, on-air fundraising, major gifts and planned giving. The Senior Director is the primary liaison to PBS national partners that provide development tools and services to PBS stations. Working closely with these partners and all PBS stations, the Senior Director provides input and guidance on best practices, innovative initiatives and information sharing. Effectively and positively representing PBS in all interactions, s/he leverages relationships to assist stations in maximizing their revenues from annual individual contributors by identifying appropriate professional development activities, tools, services, training and consultation and providing assistance, information and materials. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Provides leadership, direction and oversight of the work of PBS Development Services staff and initiatives related to individual giving. Collaborates with colleagues within the department and across functional areas of PBS to ensure that all assets delivered by PBS to stations are coordinated for greatest station value, including leveraging for financial sustainability at the local level. Proactively works with local stations to provide assistance with individual giving practices and applications including all membership and on-air fundraising. Identifies system needs for professional development regarding individual giving and works with Development Services team to create or acquire supporting materials and training opportunities leading to station financial sustainability. Serves as a primary internal contact for development content for PBS at national conferences, including PBS Annual Meeting, Public Media Development and Marketing Conference (PMDMC), national development and marketing meetings and partner conferences (PMBA, NETA). Represents development interests for PBS in special projects and programs. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 8+ total years’ experience in fundraising, including 5 years’ experience in public television individual gifts fundraising, including membership and major gifts. 5+ years’ experience managing a staff of professionals. Experience successfully managing large-scale projects with budget responsibility. A proven track record of collaborating across departments, with peers and with colleagues/stakeholders outside of the organization. MINIMUM EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience. OTHER SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED: Ability to work effectively in a matrix organization, with a complex network of internal/national and external/local stakeholders. Openness to embracing the unique challenges of a hybrid organization Demonstrated capacity to juggle multiple projects simultaneously. Superior oral and written communication skills. Respectful of others’ experiences and expertise and, at the same time, a high-energy thought leader who is comfortable with new opportunities and can anticipate and lead new initiatives. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and rapidly-changing environment. Ability to develop plans, capture and analyze data, summarize findings and implement initiatives. Ability to work on several projects simultaneously. Attention to detail and pride in high-quality execution of work. Strong written and verbal communication and computer capabilities. A deep understanding and appreciation for public media in general, and public television especially. A clear understanding and high regard for the mission and legacy of PBS, a desire to be invested in its future, and a willingness to learn its unique culture where stakeholder buy-in and public service are core values.
