Set Apart BY HEATHER GEMMEN WILSON Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. (1 Pet. 2:11) Set Apart As a baby, I was in a car accident that severely damaged me. Both my legs were broken, my entire body was bruised and bloody, my head was gashed, and my right arm and hand were burned. The only lasting effect, thankfully, was the loss of several fingers and a disfigured arm. The injury doesn’t stop me from doing anything, including typing and playing the piano, but it is a constant reminder of how my life was spared. Every time I shake someone’s hand, which happens frequently as a pastor’s wife, I am aware—and so is the person I’m greeting—that I am different. Standing out is uncomfortable. We all want to fit in. We sometimes take drastic measures to prove that we belong. As Christians, though, we have to let go of that instinct. We have to remind ourselves that we don’t belong to this world, that by resisting our human nature we maintain our citizenship as God’s holy people. It’s true that we are able to do everything others can, but we have a reminder—the Holy Spirit within us—that we are different. A leader is not afraid to stand out. Scripture says, “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God” (1 Pet. 2:12). —Heather Gemmen Wilson
