Seventy eight years ago today a writer passed away. Some argue he did more to bring poetry to the ordinary person than any other before or since. He took classical poetry from the realms of the educated elite, blended it with vaudeville and songs from the barracks and although still writing much for the upper classes he wrote just as much for the rest of society. He chronicled the era and continents in which he lived and through his literary works recorded the events and attitudes and sub-cultures of India, Africa, America, England and many other places while Victoria reigned. His memory lives on not just in his written words but in films that you probably dont associate with him .... Disneys Jungle Book, Sean Connery and Michael Caine in The Man Who Would Be King, Spencer Traceys classic Captains Courageous. Errol Flynns famous Kim. But of the hundreds of poems and books and essays he wrote perhaps his most famous contribution was the classic poem that everyone at some time in their lives has heard and which contains philosophies that are still so relevant at so many levels. He chose the simplest of titles for that deceptively deep and evocative poem ..... If. Rest well Rudyard Kipling. youtube/watch?v=LllTpKxURzg
