Sharing last Sabbaths lesson from our Couples Caregroup How is that two people can stand at an altar and swear on their lives that theyll love each other forever, til death do us part-- and then absolutely hate each other only five years down the road? Not just that, but they hate each other more than any other individual on the planet. Isnt that weird? Those bump situations occur regularly in our marriages -- sometimes daily. When the next bump comes in your marriage, be prepared to follow this exercise -- (1) identify your feeling, (2) name it, (3) say the name aloud, and (4) if and when appropriate, talk about it with your spouse. We need a proactive strategy for doing this. Were good at monitoring our spouses behavior, but were horrible at monitoring whats really happening in our own hearts. As we learn to do the above exercise, we so often realize that a marriage problem were experiencing is actually a problem in our own hearts. Let these urgent words from the Bible be a continuing reminder of how critically important it is to realize whats going on inside you: Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23.
