Since my thesis wont be published for the moment, I would like to publicly share my acknowledgment page in gratitude for everyone who took part in it. Acknowledgments Written in challenging and troubled times, this thesis would not have been possible without the guidance, encouragement and input of so many people. I cannot express enough gratitude to my advisor Dr Emad Shahin who was extremely patient with me, provided me much-needed direction, and encouragement in every step of the way proving to be a great mentor. I am impressed and appreciative for how he was always able to give me thorough and prompt feedback amidst all circumstances. If it were not for his continuous support I would have given up midway more than once. I am forever indebted to his guidance, kindness and understanding. And I am proud that he has been my advisor. I am thankful to my committee members Dr Sandrine Gamblin and Dr Heba Raouf Ezzat who graciously accepted to read my thesis and provided me with useful feedback. Thanks is extended to Dr Sherene Seikaly, former Director of the Middle East Studies Center, who closely oversaw the proposal writing process and has always been generous with her time and advice. My heartfelt thanks to my parents who believed in me and endured with me the mood swings and stress of the two years of masters. Without their unconditional support I couldn’t have made it. I owe everything to them. I would also like to thank my cousin Sarah Rifky for our insightful and often therapeutic discussions and my aunt Randa Effat for her great help with formatting the bibliography. I am short of words to thank my friends: Neama Ebaid my masters buddy who shared the two-year journey with me through thick and thin; Ayat El Okaily who was a great writing companion and support; and Nareman Amin who proofread many parts of my thesis and gave me valuable feedback. Special thanks goes to all my “post-revolution friends”. You were my real inspiration and for you I am writing this. Tariq Ismail, نعمة الله هشام , Ahmed Adel and محمد الباقر, getting to know you all has been one of the great blessings in my life. Thank you for giving me hope and belief in a better future. And thank you for always being there for me. I am especially grateful to Mohamed El Baker who gave me a lot of his time and thought during the initial stages of the project and who put me in touch with many of my interviewees. Finally, I thank everyone who helped me formulate my ideas, agreed to be interviewed, generously helped me with contacts or references, sincerely prayed for me or just eagerly followed my “writing marathon” over Facebook and virtually cheered for me. Know it or not, you have taken part in this thesis and your support made all the difference. Thank you. Khadiga Omar December 2014 Cairo, Egypt
