Since you asked....heres more on the Lewis Miller drawing (from our collection of over 2,000 Lewis Millers) in our last post: Folk artist Lewis Miller drew this portrait of Yorker Samuel Bacon in 1810. Bacon served as leader of a pioneering expedition moving a group of free blacks to Africa to set up an independent colony. If successful, many abolitionist groups hoped that colonization of freed slaves would serve as a viable solution to the abolishment of the institution of slavery. Although Bacon succumbed to fever shortly after their arrival in Africa, the surviving settlers helped form the country of Liberia, formally established in 1822.
