So I have been concerned for some time now that Maya, my Shire, might have CPL. A recent post by a DHF member only reinforced that concern. Here are some of the issues Im having. I always have to keep her clipped in the summer, bc shes always had what I thought were reoccurring scratches. Sulfur and mineral oil have usually worked to clear them up, but they are coming back more frequently then they used to. She has anhydrosis, so is hosed daily in the summer. I feel like its kind of a catch 22, bc the feathers trap the bacteria in, but when theyre clipped, the foot is directly exposed to dew, water, other types of moisture, etc. I still choose to keep her clipped. I had one of my vets look at her a year ago and another several years back. Both told me they wouldnt worry about it, but freely admitted they did not know much about the disease. Now, Im going with my gut feeling. The worst sores/lesions are directly behind the pastern and have started going up the leg. I have never clipped the long hair on the cannon bone, but will start doing that now. I thought the skin behind the pastern had gotten thicker due to scar tissue, but now its starting to feel lumpy. Her hind feet are the worst, but her front are also affected. I would appreciate info from anyone who is currently dealing with this, or might have expertise on the subject. Can a biopsy be done for a definitive diagnosis? What about the ELISA test?? Im posting some pics, but the scratches are actually worse. She is normally clipped much closer, but I had started letting her grow them out this winter, as she usually only has them in the summer. Thoughts, suggestions, ideas?? Am I just being paranoid? Thanks guys.
