Social scientist Shiv Vishwanath articulates AAPs quest for full participatory democracy in this opinion piece: When the citizens of Khirkee objected to its transformation into a red light area, the police and the politicians were indifferent. What Kejriwal argued was that in a democracy where police and Parliament disempower people, a chief minister’s place is with the people. Democracy then moves from being representational to becoming direct. Empowerment goes beyond participation and consultation and asks people to decide about their lives. Decision making is direct. It needs no letters to editor, or permissions from the politician. A locality no longer feels helpless because police is indifferent or a legislator is absent. Kejriwal is also challenging frozen dualisms, questing categories which we have almost rendered sacred.
