Some words from KFAIs departing program director extraordinaire Miguel Vargas of Radio Pocho. Huge shouts of LOVE for all he has done for our community - true rock star status ! If you havent heard by now, this week is my last serving as Program Director at KFAI - Fresh Air Radio. What can I say? For the past 2.5 years, Ive had the privilege to run a community radio station, and I want to say big thank you to my former colleague, mentor, and dear friend, Janis Lane-Ewart for providing me with the opportunity of a lifetime. During my time here. this empowering experience demonstrated that there was nothing I couldnt learn to do, even if it was outside of my job description, prior work, educational, or life experiences. One of my regrets is that the volunteers and programmers here at the station did not receive more external recognition for all of their excellent work, programming, dedication, and community service. About those wonderful volunteers, Ive taken note from some of our most experienced volunteer programmers on what makes a successful program for your listeners and community. Ive also tried to pass this knowledge down to encourage and make room in KFAIs programming for other volunteers, whether young or old, or from underrepresented communities who are seeking media access. I appreciate the time I have spent with all volunteers and colleagues whether in the studios, newsroom, green room, the front desk, or even from a remote location during a live broadcast; everyone involved is such an integral part of how KFAI works. I hope these kinds of dialogue and interactions will continue in the future at the station, and that its transparent enough for more of the community to support. In the meantime Radio Pocho will continue every Wednesday night. Aside from that, I will be humbly taking time off in figuring what my next steps in my career. I will be stacking all of my skill chips to see what they amount to, and where they can be applied. Its also not a bad time to dream big, and to keep an open mind. I appreciate everyones support during this trying, yet exciting time. In the words of LatinoAltRock and John Del Vecchio, su comandante en jefe por siempre, y palante! Miguel
