Soooooo Auntie Candace challenged me to the ALS ice bucket deal. (I wrote my check 2 weeks ago but neglected the ice part.) Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrigs Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. Now... I have an unfair advantage over most if youll call it that. I have a nerve condition (trigeminal neuralgia) which complicates life in general--which is why I couldnt feel the ice immediately. I have limited perception of heat and cold. Also my jaw is locked due to a recent flare (temporary but slow reversing) so I wasnt able to speak clearly for a narrative. I did squeal like a piggy at the end. Enjoy!
