Soulclap to Mike for sharing -- Networking: The Key To Success (Part 2 of 2) - So its the 1990s and Ive found a Financial Services Organization (UBC/UFSC), but now I want to find a organization focused on Technology. Back in those days we had something in NYC called, The Summer Sizzler. Organization would come together for one joint event. Present were Urban Financial Services Coalition, BDPA Information Technology Thought Leaders, National Alliance of Market Developers , National Association of Black Accountants, National Society of Black Engineers and more. Tony Codrington connected me with the VP of the Local Chapter of BDPA, Renee McClure (who went on to be local and National President). At the Chapter event I met the Local President Roger Dunn who was also National Bylaws Chair. The National President was Vivian Wilson and National VP was Wayne Hicks. As I sat in the meeting I read an article in the BDPA Newsletter called, Unity In the Black BBS World written by Idette Idette Brown-Vaughan I had been tinkering with a Bulletin board system System at the time and this really interested me. I dialed up Idettes board, my holding my son Mike Jr, and started a chat session, which evolved into a phone call. I realized the BBS was growing and a network was in place by Art McGee of BBS Operators from all over called AfroNet. BDPA also begun their own Network with Community Board messages being delivered electronically and I was fortunate to connect the BDPA NY Chapter BBS to BDPANET completing the West Coast, MidWest, and East Coast connection. There was no Internet. Everything was Dialup connection. Major Services were Compuserve and Prodigy. We used the WildCat BBS Software then by Mustang Software (no Santronices). Setting up the BBS taught me how to edit scripts and use third party software (Doors, etc.) for Merchant Processing and more. Present day the the same functionality is done over the Web and the WildCat Software still runs over the web via Santronics Software. Thank You so very much BDPA ( bdpa.org/ ), AfroNet, Wayne Hicks, Tony Codrington, Renee McClure, Roger Dunn and the many many more I met only online via the BBS before every meeting in person such as Liz Liz Crockett Hicks,, Wayne Hicks, Jerry Kirkpatrick, Philip Murphy, Eddie Hicks, and so may more!!! Networking...A Powerful Key To Success!
