Southern Miss @ Nebraska Game Notes Noting the Golden Eagles • Southern Miss starts a three-game road swing over the next four weeks that includes trips to Nebraska (9/7), Arkansas (9/14) and Boise State (9/28). Southern Miss also will have one of its two bye weeks during the season on Sept. 21. • This stretch is the first time Southern Miss will play three-straight road games since 2009 when they played Kansas (9/26), UAB (10/1) and Louisville (10/10) in consecutive weeks that season. • Six Golden Eagles made their fi rst career starts, including wide receivers Tyre’oune Holmes and Rickey Bradley, Jr., quarterback Allan Bridgford, defensive lineman Jerry McCorvey, and offensive linemen Fredrick Moore and Rashod Hill. • Southern Miss dropped its opener for the second consecutive year in a 22-15 loss to Texas State, falling to 63-33 in season openers. • Southern Miss registered six turnovers against Texas State, marking the most since recording that many giveaways at Marshall on Sept. 10, 2011. • Wide receiver Rickey Bradley, Jr., playing in his fi rst game for the Golden Eagles, caught seven passes for 193 yards, marking the most receiving yards since DeAndre Brown caught 12 passes for 221 yards against Rice on Oct. 18, 2008. His total receiving yards for the contest are the fourth-most in a game in school history. • Freshman receiver Tyre’oune Holmes had 12 catches for 96 yards in his fi rst game. Holmes’ reception total ties for second-best by a Golden Eagle in a contest and is the most by a Southern Miss player appearing in his fi rst game. • Freshman wide receiver James Cox caught his fi rst pass in the contest, scoring on a sixyard strike from Bridgford. • The Golden Eagle defense registered their most plays for loss (11) against Texas State since notching 13 at East Carolina on Nov. 5, 2011. The Nebraska Series • The meeting with Nebraska will be the fi fth between the two schools in football and the Cornhuskers hold a 3-1 advantage in the series (Please see page 5 for a breakdown). • The two teams met to open the season in 2012 and the Huskers registered a 49-20 decision in the contest. Tracy Lampley collected a 100-yard kickoff return midway through the fi rst quarter and quarterback Chris Campbell hit Dominique Sullivan for a 24-yard touchdown pass with 13:09 left in the second quarter to tie the game at 14, before the Huskers scored 28 of the game’s next 31 points to put the contest out of reach. • Southern Miss took advantage of fi ve Husker turnovers on Sept. 11, 2004, to capture its lone victory in the series, 21-17. • This will be the fourth trip to Lincoln to face the Huskers and the school has posted a 1-2 mark. NU won the only meeting in Hattiesburg, 38-14, on Sept. 25, 2003, in a Thursday night contest. • Nebraska opened its 2013 last week with a 37-34 home victory over Wyoming. Against the Big Ten • Southern Miss has posted a 2-4 overall record against schools that were members of the Big Ten when the two teams played, having posted a 2-0 record against Illinois, while dropping the only meeting with Indiana and Nebraska (last season), along with two meetings with Penn State. • If you factor in the entire Nebraska series, the Golden Eagles are 3-6 all-time against current Big Ten opponents. TV Notes • The Southern Miss football team makes its fi rst-ever appearance on the Big Ten Network this weekend. • This will be the fi rst of 10 television appearances for the Golden Eagles this season when they meet the Huskers. •The Golden Eagles are 83-73 all-time when they play on television.
