Sports Ministry Tightens Screws Richard Manuba/December 15, 2014-Monrovia: What appears to be stringent measures to regulate the operations of the Liberian sporting arena has been reportedly agreed amongst all subsidy-receiving sporting federations and associations. The 5-page document reinforces the national government’s responsibility and full ownership of all national teams including football, and also mandates all sporting disciplines not to sign any agreement or contract on behalf of the National teams of Liberia without seeking the sports ministry’s approval. According to the new regulations, sports associations and federations under the government’s direct funding are mandated to demonstrate accountability by making annual financial and situational report to the youth and sports ministry. Most of the sporting disciplines fall short of athletes’ development through a clearly-defined technical plan to host competitions regularly. The newly-adopted rules and regulations also address this problem, making the hosting of regular competition binding. The youth and sports ministry and the heads of sporting bodies also reportedly agreed to conduct their affairs in line with the by-laws of their international parent organizations, and must hold elections in accordance with constitutional provisions. Speaking to RCI Sports over the weekend to popularize the document, Sports Bureau officials Karim Nyanneh, and Bryant McGill stressed that the sports ministry is prepared to ensure full compliance and adherence to the new rules and regulations to promote the vibrancy of Liberian sports. -end-
