Stats: The seasonal flu kills more people every month than Ebola has in its entire existence. (source:CDC) So far the GLOBAL death tolls for Ebola do not match that of even US deaths from the flu. In bad flu years the death toll in the US alone passes 40,000 which is higher than the high estimates for Ebola and about 10,000 times more than what we have now. Ebola is a horrible thing that is affecting people. But the fear and publicity is not proportional to its statistical relevance. Why is this? Because media does not exist to inform but to sell ad space...and they know that fear.... ....especially gripping fear that gets you to tune in for hours at a time wondering if you need a post 9-11 gas mask, or should worry about Anthrax in the mail or you should worry about ISIS beheadings or wear a mask to prevent SARS or to prevent a Sarin gas attack or where the Malaysian flight went.....they know that this gripping fear keeps people tuned in for hours....and they can sell 5-10 or 100 times the ad space they could have otherwise sold. The seasonal flu....while more statistically likely to kill people....simply doesnt sell the ad space.
