#Sunday_Ponder The word Secularism was not mentioned in Indian Constitution. During Emergency, words secular and socialist were added and India was described as Secular and Socialist republic. But the word Secularism was not defined. 45th amendment bill proposed an amendment of article 366 by inserting definition of secularism and socialist. But this was rejected by council of states. So Secularism remains undefined in Indian constitution however a footnote has been inserted and it describe what secularism connotes. Based on that, it is very clear that Government has to maintain equal distance from all religion and itll not give any favor on basis of religion and will not engage in spreading a religion. Now the question is who is Government ? According to my view not only ruling alliance but opposition is also government in one sense as they are very much involved in enacting laws and governing country. And if a party whose name and manifesto clearly indicate that theyll work for upliftment of one religious group then how come Government is secular ? Members of such parties could be a part of alliance or opposition. So granting political party status to such party is akin to compromising with secularism. And we do have such parties. So how come India is a Secular country ( As per note mentioned in constitution) ?
