TEXAS MUSIC IS LOVED RAY WYLIE HUBBARD For SEPTEMBER 18th 2014 Ray Wylie Hubbard was born November 13, 1946 in Soper, Oklahoma and became a Texas Country singer and songwriter. Hubbard grew up in town of Hugo, Oklahoma. His family moved to Oak Cliff in south Dallas, Texas when he was 8 years old. He attended W. H. Adamson High School there beside his friend Michael Martin Murphey, who had his own band at the time. Hubbard graduated high school in 1965 and enrolled in college, at what is now, the University of North Texas. He spent some of his summers in Red River, New Mexico playing folk music. During his time in New Mexico, he wrote his biggest “Redneck Rock” hit Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother. This song made famous by Jerry Jeff Walker in 1973 when he and his band recorded and published it. Hubbard recorded for various music labels but, struggled with sales; his mix of country, folk and blues elements didn’t find an audience. After leaving the scene and struggling with personal drug addiction problems, he returned to recording with “Lost Train of Thought” in 1992 and “Loco Gringos Lament” in 1994. These recordings were well received. Today Ray Wylie Hubbard is an elder statesman of the Texas music scene. From his current home in New Braunfels, Texas, Hubbard hosts a Tuesday night radio show called Roots & Branches.
