THE ONE MAN ARMY THROUGHOUT HISTORY! 1. HORATIUS - in 508 BCE (pre Lorica Segmentata), a lone Roman sentry on the Tiber Bridge who, using a Gladius and Shield, held off the Etruscan Army long enough for his comrades to destroy the crossing. 2. CHORSAMANTIS THE AVAR - in 538 AD during the siege of Rome, maddened by drink, rode out alone into the barbarian camp, dispatching 20 horsemen. 3. THE UNKNOWN VIKING - in 1066 Harolds Saxon Army marched on York to fight Harald Hadradas Norwegian Army. A single Viking champion slew the first 40 men who attempted to cross the Stamford Bridge, before a boat was used under the bridge to spear him from below, killing him. 4. BENKEI THE WARRIOR MONK - (died in 1189), famous for his prowess with the Naginata (Halberd), stood on the Gojo Bridge in Kyoto challenging all comers. Legend says he defeated several hundred warriors before being beaten. 5. SIR WILLIAM MARSHALL - (1146-1219), a famous and highly skilled medieval knight. His first engagement was at the Battle of Drincourt at the age of 21, where though his destrier (warhorse) was killed, he defeated 40 knights in succession without stopping. 6. PEDRO FRANCISCO - (died 1831), a 6ft 6ins Portuguese American and famous private soldier of the American War of Independence. In 1779 in captured the British flag at Stony Point, the British military fortress on the Hudson. In one short engagement he killed 11 enemy soldiers using a 6ft broadsword. Reputably, George Washington said that Without him we would have lost two crucial battles, perhaps the War and with it our freedom. He was truly a One-Man Army.
