THE PERFECTING OF OUR FAITH Faith is tested by trials. Without trials faith cannot be perfected as gold cannot be purified without fire. In James 1:2-3, James urges believers to continue to accept trials and tribulations “with pure joy”. He explains why the attitude of joy is essential: Because when faith is tested and tried it develops patience, which in turn, produces spiritual maturity or perfection. It’s not natural to associate trials with joy. Joy in tribulations and trial is a work of faith! Trials do not discourage the believer; for if we remain faithful, we will “come forth as gold tried in the fire” (Job 23:10). James’ appeal for tested faith is consistent with the teaching of Jesus who encourages an attitude of joy in trails: “Rejoice and be exceeding glad; for great is your reward in heaven..” (Matt 5:12). The apostle Peter also taught that “all kinds of trials” refines as pure gold) I Peter 1:6,7) Happy Sabbath to everyone.
