THE SUNDAY SERMON The Spiritual Gift of Teaching 2 Timothy 3:15-17 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and isprofitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. The Spiritual gift of Teaching is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:6–8; 1 Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 4:1–12). Teaching is the supernatural endowment of the Holy Spirit, enabling one to communicate the truths of the Bible to others. It is most often, but not always, used in the context of the local church. The gift of teaching involves the analysis and proclamation of the Word of God, explaining the meaning, context, and application to the hearer’s life. The gifted teacher is one who has the unique ability to clearly instruct and communicate knowledge, specifically the doctrines of the faith and truths of the Bible. The edification of the church is comes through the divine aptitude of teaching. As people listen to the Word of God, they receive instruction into WHAT IT MEANS, and HOW TO APPLY IT TO THEIR OWN LIVES. God equips many with this gift to build people up in their faith and enable them to grow in all wisdom and knowledge (2 Peter 3:18). Although it can be a process of development, the spiritual gift of teaching is not something that we learn or acquire, as with a college degree. Persons with a Ph.D., but without the gift of teaching, will not be able to expound the Bible as one without a degree, but having the Spiritual Gift of Teaching. Many Christians, who believe there is no other Christian capable of teaching or showing how God wants the Word applied, is one who may need more teaching of God’s Word. Proverbs 27:17 teaches of one increasing the spiritual image of an associate: “As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” Sometimes, the growth that we think we see in the teacher is actually the growth in ourselves. Meditations: Proverbs 12:1 Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, But he who hates correction is stupid. Proverbs 15:32 He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, But he who heeds rebuke gets understanding. Proverbs 19:27 Cease listening to instruction, my son, And you will stray from the words of knowledge. Proverbs 23:12 Apply your heart to instruction, And your ears to words of knowledge
